Mille Feuille – classic French pastry with strawberries

Mille Feuille step by step

To assemble the Mille Feuille, place one layer of puff pastry on a serving platter and spread a generous amount of pastry cream on top. Repeat with the remaining layers of puff pastry and pastry cream, ending with a layer of puff pastry on top. Sprinkle the top layer with powdered sugar.

Refrigerate the Mille-Feuille for at least an hour to allow the layers to set. When you’re ready to serve, use a sharp knife to slice the pastry into individual portions. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Strawberries

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into three equal pieces and prick each piece all over with a fork.
  3. Place the pastry pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  4. In a saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and milk until smooth.
  5. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and softened butter. Let the pastry cream cool to room temperature.
  7. To assemble the Mille-Feuille, place one piece of the cooled puff pastry on a serving platter, spread a layer of pastry cream over it and decorate with strawberries cut in slices. 
  8. Repeat the layers of pastry strawberries and cream, ending with a layer of pastry on top.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the layers to set.
  10. Dust the top layer with powdered sugar just before serving.
  11. Use a sharp knife to slice the Mille-Feuille into individual portions.
