Freshly baked apple pie

Ingredients:

  • 2 pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 6 cups thinly sliced and peeled apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Roll out one of the pie crusts and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. Trim the edges and crimp as desired.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the sliced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the apples are well coated.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust and dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  5. Roll out the second pie crust and place it on top of the apple filling. Trim the edges and crimp as desired.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and heavy cream. Brush the top of the pie crust with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
  7. Cut a few slits in the top of the pie to allow steam to escape.
  8. Bake the pie for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Let the pie cool to room temperature before slicing and serving.
